Emmerdale spoilers follow.

Emmerdale star Fred Kettle has shared how Dylan Penders’s return will affect Marlon Dingle.

Dylan was first introduced as a friend of April Windsor, who she met while living on the streets. Though the kids formed a strong bond, April’s dad Marlon made it clear that he didn’t trust Dylan.

After a rocky relationship, Dylan and Marlon parted on good terms in March, with the chef paying for Dylan’s rehab. But how will Marlon react when he learns that the troubled teen is back in the village?

This week’s episodes saw a reunion between Dylan and April, with the former explaining that he is now clean from drugs. However, Kettle, who plays Dylan, explained that Marlon is still wary of his friendship with his daughter.

“Despite the fact Dylan helped her on the streets and things, at the end of the days he’s not the best lad. When Marlon pictures April hanging around with friends and things, it wouldn’t be with Dylan! Especially with his past with drugs.”

The actor defended Marlon’s reaction, which he described as “understandable” given his “protective” attitude towards his daughter, adding that it’s up to Dylan to “let it simmer and relax a little bit”.

He continued: “But it is awkward between them both, especially with Marlon previously planting drugs on him. They try to avoid each other a little bit. But then I also think Marlon feels bad… I think it’s a mix of emotions. It’s a weird feeling for all of them.”

Explaining why Dylan returned to the Dales, Kettle revealed that his character was “intrigued” about April’s wellbeing, explaining: “I think he just wants to know what’s going on in her life.

“Is she at school? Is she not? Is she working? He’s just intrigued because at the end of the day he really cares about her. They really care about each other. I think they just rely on each other to be honest.

“I feel like it’s such a raw and fresh feeling for both of them because I don’t think that either of them have ever experienced this sort of relationship… It’s just new to them and I think they’re just sort of taking it as it comes.”

Kettle, who returned to the soap earlier this week after an absence of four months, also shared that Dylan will come into contact with Paddy Dingle following the injury he sustained at the barn, with the actor saying the scenes were “fun” to film.

“April wants to help him with the injury and she ends up taking him to the vets and she’s going to try and do whatever she can to heal it,” he said. “Paddy ends up walking in seeing Dylan for the first time in ages… It’s all quite pandemonium there.”

Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV1, and streams on ITVX.
