A new Sherlock Holmes has entered the fray, with a beloved Scottish star set to portray the iconic detective in Watson.
The CBS series, which made its debut earlier this year, follows the character’s sidekick Dr John Watson (played by Morris Chestnut), putting a medical drama twist on the character.
We follow him as he “resumes his medical career as the head of a clinic dedicated to treating rare disorders”.
“Watson’s old life isn’t done with him, though – Moriarty and Watson are set to write their own chapter of a story that has fascinated audiences for more than a century,” the synopsis adds.
While Sherlock is presumed dead in the show, having been killed by nemesis Moriarty one year before the events of the show, it turns out he will appear in season 2 after all.

Trainspotting and The Full Monty star Robert Carlyle will portray the character in a recurring guest role capacity, resurfacing as Watson is forced to confront a buried past secret, which lies hidden in his body.
“We are thrilled to have the mighty Robert Carlyle join the cast of Watson in Season 2,” showrunner Craig Sweeny said. “The man has played iconic roles in projects like Trainspotting, The Full Monty and 28 Weeks Later, and now he steps into the shoes of the most iconic detective of all, Sherlock Holmes.
ITV
“When Watson’s best friend and former partner makes a shocking reappearance in his life, Watson is forced to confront their shared past – and a secret that may lie buried within Watson’s own body.”
As well as Trainspotting, Carlyle has appeared in Once Upon a Time and COBRA, and also returned to the world of The Full Monty in the 2023 revival series. He also appeared in Netflix’s Toxic Town earlier this year.
Watson airs on CBS in the US.
