Coronation Street spoilers follow from Wednesday’s episode (13 August), which is available to watch now on ITVX and YouTube but hasn’t yet aired on ITV1.

Coronation Street’s Gary Windass is dishing out vigilante justice in a dark new storyline twist.

The long-serving character’s worrying new direction is officially confirmed tonight, as he’s implicated in a violent assault against Noah Hedley.

Wednesday’s episode sees the local hardman go looking for Noah at the community centre, with revenge in mind.

Driven by Theo Silverton’s recent revelations over Noah’s homophobia and cruel mind games, Gary wants to make the villain pay for what he’s done.

In big scenes this evening, Maria Connor thwarts her husband’s first drastic plan, as she catches him clutching a hammer while he lies in wait for Noah at the community centre.

Maria urges Gary to see that this isn’t the answer to Theo’s problems, so she shows him a different form of protest by painting Pride rainbows on Noah’s homophobic posters and leaflets.

Later, though, Theo’s estranged wife Danielle reappears on the cobbles and breaks the shocking news that Noah has now been rushed to hospital after a brutal beating.

Danielle accuses a baffled Theo and his new boyfriend Todd Grimshaw of being involved, but she’s on the wrong track…

Back home with Maria, sheepish Gary covers up a blood stain on his t-shirt – it’s clear that he was the one who attacked Noah.

The plot twist had seemed inevitable in recent days, as Corrie has been sowing the seeds for Gary’s return to the dark side. In reflective moments, Gary has been repeatedly expressing regrets over letting people “walk all over” him.

The ex-soldier has specifically mentioned his stepson Liam’s bullying ordeal, and his own ordeals with Lou and Mick Michaelis. So, has Gary changed for good after the events of recent months? Only time will tell…

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
