Furious, the new crime drama starring Emmy Rossum and Lola Petticrew, has only just released the finale for its first season today (31 August), but fans don’t need to wait long for news about a potential follow-up.
That’s because the show, which airs on Hulu and Disney+, was actually renewed last week, days ahead of the finale. Deadline notes that it’s an unusual move, as Disney and other streamers usually wait to amass longer-term viewing data before making a decision.
Viewership numbers aren’t known, but the publication reports that Disney has stated that the show has been pulling in more viewers each week. At the time of writing, the show is at #2 in the streamer’s TV chart, right behind Adults.

Created and produced by Elizabeth Meriwether, who previously helmed New Girl and The Dropout, the series is inspired by Bob Rafelson’s 1987 film Black Widow, which starred Debra Winger and Dennis Hopper.
Furious follows Rossum’s Alice Black, a former detective for the New York Police Department who now works for the FBI. She’s on the hunt for a serial killer, who seems to be targeting wealthy men.
As well as attracting some big viewing figures, Furious has been highly acclaimed by critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, the crime drama has a near-perfect approval rating of 98% from 58 reviews, while the audience score is at 88%.
“Compelling and defiantly complex, Furious shifts the crime genre into vital new territory, reframing the scope and potential of crime dramas in their approach to female victimhood”, wrote Empire Magazine, while NPR called it “boldly original”.

The New Yorker was also full of praise, writing: “After a conventional start, Furious comes to feel alive and delightfully contradictory: at once cerebral and pulpy, compassionate and unhinged.”
Meanwhile, a fan on IMDb called it an “outstanding cat-and-mouse crime drama”, adding: “The two female leads… are beyond outstanding, and they carry this series on their shoulders, pure and simple.”
