Coronation Street has given fans an update on Audrey Roberts’s whereabouts after fans haven’t seen her on screen for 10 months. The iconic character has been played by Sue Nicholls since 1979, but she’s now gone unseen for the best part of a year.

Previously, the show had explained her absence as being abroad in France visiting daughter Gail Platt, also hinting at Audrey having found a (rich) new boyfriend.

Tonight’s episode saw David return to the cobbles after his own absence (actor Jack P Shepherd went on paternity leave), with the soap explaining that he also went abroad to spend time with Gail.

Now that he’s back, he shared an update on Audrey.

Speaking to Shona in the middle of tonight’s episode, David revealed that Audrey was “swanning about with this new fella of hers, trying to speak French”.

“I mean, in her accent, can you imagine? Oooh, café. Oooh, croissant, s’il vous plaaaaaaaaît,” he added.

David’s time in France also saw him get a buzz cut, much to Shona’s surprise. There’s a real-life reason for the new hairstyle that’s more than just David’s in-show reason of just fancying a change, as Shepherd has undergone a third hair transplant.

Last year Audrey only featured in 28 episodes, and while there are overall less episodes a week nowadays to possibly appear in, nine months in and zero appearances proved quite upsetting for fans.

Meanwhile, former Corrie star Daniel Brocklebank has landed a new on-stage role in a big-name production alongside a recognisable EastEnders star.

Coronation Street airs on weeknights at 8.30pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX and YouTube.
