Woolworths sells a staggering five of its signature mudcakes every single minute – and now, gluten-free Aussies won’t have to miss out on the action.
The supermarket giant has officially expanded its iconic bakery range with the launch of a ‘Free From Gluten’ Chocolate Mudcake, catering to the one in 10 Australians who avoid gluten and the more than 400,000 living with coeliac disease.
It retails for $10 – $3 more than the regular $7 version – and promises the exact same dense, fudgy chocolate taste without any wheat.
Better yet for dietary-restricted shoppers, it is a permanent addition to the bakery aisle rather than a limited-edition run.
“Our classic chocolate mudcake is an Aussie icon, but a celebration just isn’t the same when someone has to miss out,” a Woolworths spokesperson told news.com.au.
“We created the Free From Gluten version so that every family member, friend, and colleague can finally share the experience. We worked hard to innovate a recipe that draws inspiration from the original … just without the wheat.”
Word of the launch began spreading on social media after foodie account @Au_bitesandfinds tried the new item, sharing a photo of the packaging – which looks almost identical to the one with wheat – to eager followers.
“Noo way,” one user commented, while others flooded the post with heart emojis.
First launched over 30 years ago, the Woolies mudcake has built a massive cult following.
While the retailer has experimented with limited-edition flavours over the last seven years – including Hokey Pokey, Pumpkin Spice, and Strawberry Shortcake – this latest addition comes directly off the back of customer feedback asking for inclusive options.
The ‘Free From Gluten’ Chocolate Mudcake officially hits shelves alongside the classic Chocolate, White Chocolate, and Caramel options in Woolworths supermarkets and Metro stores nationwide on Monday, August 24.
To celebrate the drop, Woolworths is also releasing a limited-edition $2 Mudcake Reusable Shopping Bag from August 26, available while stocks last.
“Creating a bag was our way of having a bit of fun with that heritage,” Rhonda Ma, General Manager of Bags at Woolworths, said. “It’s a great little add-on for customers who love the range as much as we do.”
