SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) – An event featuring findings from the South Dakota Health and Nutrition Collaborative’s statewide food and nutrition security assessment is coming to Sioux Falls on September 24.
Jenn Folliard with the SD Healthy Nutrition Collaborative joined Dakota News Now with the details.
“This is a project of the South Dakota Health and Nutrition Collaborative. We’re forty organizations that are statewide and are interested in improving food and nutrition security in the state,” said Folliard.
“Rapid City has done a great assessment. Sioux Falls had a great assessment. But we really needed to get a better understanding of what food and nutrition security looked like. So, we pulled together research funding through a variety of different funding sources to look at a lot of different data sets, to do a survey, and to do focus groups and interviews across the state to better understand what food and nutrition security looks like in every community in the state.”
The SDHNC did a survey that received 500 responses from South Dakota, with the majority of respondents stating that affordability was their primary concern. Folliard also mentioned that 30% of those respondents stated that they were skipping meals to help stretch their budgets.
The SDHNC is holding an event tonight in Aberdeen at Avera St. Luke’s at 5:30 pm, and another event tomorrow night at the USD Campus in Sioux Falls, starting at 5:30 pm.
These events will provide attendees with a meal and a chance to learn more about the research done by the SDHNC. The events are free to attend and open to the public.
