CHICO, Calif. — Researchers at California State University, Chico are seeking night shift workers to participate in a study examining how exercise affects cardiovascular and skeletal muscle health.

According to the university, participants must be between 18 and 50 years old and work more than three hours between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. over two days per week. Eligible volunteers must be apparently healthy with no history of cardiac or metabolic disease, weigh over 110 pounds, and not smoke or consume beta-blockers.

The study involves one visit lasting approximately 2.5 hours at Yolo Hall on the Chico State campus. Participants will complete health, physical activity, exercise history, and sleep questionnaires.

Testing includes cardiovascular and metabolic function assessments, maximal cycle exercise testing, handgrip strength testing, and body composition measurements. Blood draws will also be conducted as part of the research.

Dr. Ryan Perkins, an associate professor in the Exercise Physiology Program, is the principal investigator. Those interested can contact him at rperkins2@csuchico.edu for more information.
