Bodybuilding legend Dorian Yates still trains with intensity, making recovery one of his top priorities. On August 21, 2025, he broke down the three supplements he puts into every post-workout shake.
During his career, Yates ushered in a new era of bodybuilding defined by bone-dry conditioning and sheer mass. He conquered the Mr. Olympia stage for six consecutive years, overwhelming household names in the Men’s Open, including Shawn Ray, Kevin Levrone, and Nasser El Sonbaty.
Much of Yates’ success came as a result of his unique training approach. He took wisdom from the late Arthur Jones and Mike Mentzer, following a failure-based system that didn’t focus on a specific number of reps or sets. This high-intensity training plan allowed Yates to reach the top of the sport, though some have suggested that it came at a cost, citing his biceps and triceps injuries during his reign.

After stretching and lifting weights, Yates adds these ingredients into his shake to refuel his body.
“I’ve just been doing a little bit in the gym, some stretching, a little weights. This is my post-workout, actually this is the first thing I’ve had today, and it’s like 12 o’clock. I don’t usually eat in the mornings. Days after training, it’s very important post-workout [to refuel],” shared Yates.
Although he’s stepped away from competitive bodybuilding, Yates still shares useful information about his career. He recently walked fans through the Bruce Lee-inspired abs routine he adopted. “The Shadow” explained that he would tack on abs with his usual shoulder and triceps workout since it was the least demanding of his training split.
Yates never misses a chance to help his fans achieve their dream physiques. He highlights three core principles to mastering progress: training hard with a plan, eating well with correct nutrition, and being consistent while taking notes to refine your process. And it’s not just abs that Yates has answers for; he also broke down how to level up your leg day training sessions with a useful stretch that helps prime the body to move heavy weights.
Having established himself as one of the greatest bodybuilders in the history of the sport, Yates hasn’t forgotten the game-changing strategies that forged his dynasty. To this day, whey isolate, creatine, and glutamine help him bounce back after strenuous workouts.
