Berkeley restaurant openings

11.19.25: Dough Zone, a West Coast chain home to Chinese comfort foods like soup dumplings, Szechuan dan dan noodles and pan-fried potstickers, has opened in what was formerly Triple Rock Brewing’s expanded space. It’s an ideal spot for a fast casual lunch, and if you’re not in the mood for dumplings, try the spicy beef sandwich, sweet and sour cucumber, or Shanghainese green onion soy sauce noodles. Dough Zone, 1912 Shattuck Ave. (at Hearst Ave.), Berkeley

11.05.25: Kopi Bar, Walnut Creek’s highly popular Indonesian-Californian café, left a hole in the hearts of avocado coffee lovers when it shuttered alongside sister restaurant SanDai earlier this year. But the good news is that the café is back, this time within the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, and yes — creamy avocado coffees and coconut cappuccinos are still on the menu. You’ll also find pastries and savory dishes like Indonesian fried rice, lemongrass butternut squash soup and mushroom congee. Check out Nosh’s exclusive first look at Kopi Bar for more details.  Kopi Bar, 2155 Center St., Berkeley

A new Mediterranean cafe serving breakfast and lunch opened in the former Tomate Cafe space in West Berkeley in November. Uqbar serves eggs, breakfast platters, hummus, fresh baked breads, sandwiches and more with coffee, wine and beer. The name comes from a Jorge Borges short story. Check out the Nosh feature on Uqbar for all the details and more on the owners. Uqbar, 2265 Fifth St. (at Bancroft Way), Berkeley

Castro Valley restaurant opening

11.05.25: Any guesses where the largest dim sum restaurant in the country is located? If you said Castro Valley, you’d be correct. HL Peninsula, a local purveyor of Cantonese cuisine with locations in Burlingame, Milpitas and South San Francisco, opened its behemoth East Bay location last month, boasting an occupancy of 846 across ten dining rooms and 28,000 square feet. You’ll find a menu equally as expansive, with generous dim sum offerings as well as dinner entrees and set menus best for birthdays and banquets. Steamed soup dumplings, sautéed lobster with peanuts, pan-seared pork bao and rice noodle rolls all make an appearance alongside decadent tea offerings. HL Peninsula, 3868 Castro Valley Blvd. (at Marshall St.), Castro Valley

Emeryville restaurant opening

11.25.25: The oven at Krispy Joe’s is back in business, and Psychedelic Pizza — a self-described pizza spot for “people who lost their lighter” — will be serving at the coffee/pastrami joint from 6-11 p.m. on select nights. Follow along on Instagram for details about when you can stop by for a slice. Psychedelic Pizza, 5512 San Pablo Ave. (at 55th St.), Emeryville

Oakland restaurant openings

12.03.25: Casa de Chocolates, the Berkeley-based, Latin-inspired artisan chocolatier, has expanded into Oakland. The shop opened up its second location on Park Boulevard on Nov. 29, offering handmade chocolate bon bons, truffles, and other sweets steeped in flavors from Oaxaca and Michoacán. You just can’t go wrong with Mayan espresso, tequila or chile naranja chocolates. Casa de Chocolates, 4228 Park Blvd., Oakland

11.12.25: Following Couchdate’s departure from its old Frank Ogawa Plaza spot in Downtown Oakland, Comfort Collective, a Black and queer-owned food, beverage, and event pop-up, has put down roots in the space. You can kick off your week with a Southern cuisine-inspired Sol Brunch on Sundays from 11a.m. to 4 p.m., and stay tuned on Instagram for more details on future events and pop-ups. Comfort Collective, 102 Frank H. Ogawa Plaza, Oakland

11.19.25: The restaurant formerly known as Indian Rasoi has closed and reopened under a new name, Ginger Indian Cuisine. The menu offers a broad selection of colorful dishes including lamb tikka masala, mint chicken kebabs, shrimp korma and several kinds of naan bread. Ginger Indian Cuisine, 6427 Telegraph Ave. (at 65th St.), Oakland

11.19.25: Good Times Oakland, a formerly online-only bottle shop, is now fully open in its North Oakland brick-and-mortar. The shop’s retail component opened in July, but a menu of hot dogs, cheese and charcuterie plates is now available. Drop by Thursday through Monday from 12 p.m. to 10 p.m. to sample some of the 20 wines available by the glass and 12 beers and ciders on tap. Spirits are only available through Good Times online shop. Good Times Oakland, 6369 Telegraph Ave. (at Alcatraz Ave.), Oakland

11.19.25: The cult favorite, Oakland-born Hyphy Burger has opened a second location on International Boulevard (the original resides on West Grand Avenue). Juicy smashburgers smothered in “You Feel Me” sauce, loaded fries and shakes sporting nostalgic flavors like Fruity Pebbles and Cap’n Crunch are the main attraction here — and helped launch the West Oakland burger joint into instant classic territory after its grand opening this summer. Hyphy Burger, 9825 International Blvd., Oakland

11.12.25: After 14 years in North Oakland, James and the Giant Cupcake has moved into a new spot between Equator Coffee and Whole Foods on Bay Place. (The original location, at 6326 San Pablo Ave., will remain open until the end of the month.) Decadent flavors like red velvet and salted caramel grace the menu, plus gluten-free and vegan options. James and the Giant Cupcake also offers custom cakes for special events. James and the Giant Cupcake, 175 Bay Pl., Oakland

11.25.25: The Peach, an all-day brunch spot that melds Asian flavors with American brunch classics, is now offering dinner service Thursdays through Sundays from 5-9 p.m. The dinner menu, crafted by Chef Harold Villarosa (formerly of three Michelin-starred restaurant Per Se in New York), includes items like skewers, slow-braised lamb neck on roti, crispy pork belly lettuce wraps and calabaza tamales stuffed with sweet squash and plantains. The Peach, 3257 Lakeshore Ave., Oakland

Walnut Creek restaurant opening

11.12.25: Walnut Creek is welcoming a much-anticipated listening bar developed by a star-studded team to its roster this week. Stereo41, slotted to open Nov.15, is the latest project by the same folks behind World Famous Hotboys and neighboring Latin-Caribbean spot Lita. Unlike most other low-lit, sultry Bay Area listening bars, Stereo41 feels a bit more like a party, with live DJ sets accompanying omakase-style dining in a bright, festive setting. The menu, threaded with Middle Eastern and Japanese influences, was co-created by Executive Chef Jonathan De La Torre (formerly of Quince and Mourad in San Francisco) and Snail Bar’s Andres Florez. Stop by to sample the sashimi, skewers and singari — an Egyptian style of whole-fish preparation — and pair them with a highball for an authentic hi-fi bar experience. Stereo41, 1535 Bonanza St., Walnut Creek
