Let it be stated as fact: Breakfast is the best meal. 

To be clear, we’re not claiming it is the “most important” or “least skipped.” This is just a pure, impartial evaluation — the array of breakfast food and beverage options is objectively superior to the choices offered at other meals. Case in point, eating breakfast for dinner is an established custom, while no one has ever successfully promoted the idea of eating dinner or lunch for breakfast. There you have it. 

So, when Nosh started cooking up a new event, we became consumed with the idea of celebrating the morning meal. For the inaugural BreakFest we’re bringing together great food, local makers, tunes by DJ Liam Yesterday and Nosh’s inaugural Hot Sauce Competition. It is all happening 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 12 at Hammerling Wines, 1350 Fifth St., Berkeley. 

For starters, SoDo Cafe, now with a permanent location at Hammerling Wines, will be selling its sourdough donuts and other baked goods, both sweet and savory, along with coffee and espresso drinks. Oakland’s Town Biscuits and Panamanian pop-up Chiricana will also be serving breakfast items. Joyce Tang, founder of 2025 Nosh Award winner Bake Sum, will be there to sign and sell her new cookbook, scheduled for release on Sept. 1. 

But that’s just a taste of the morning action. There will also be a full roster of Bay Area vendors selling granola, honey, flowers, bread and more (see full list below). And, for home cooks and do-it-yourselfers, there will be live demonstrations.

Nosh has also recruited small-batch Bay Area hot sauce makers for a spicy showdown. In addition to a three-judge panel electing winners in multiple categories, attendees are invited to taste their way through the contenders and vote for a favorite.
