Earlier this month it was reported that Barbie 2 might not be happening, despite the fact that the first film made a boat load of money, and Greta Gerwig and her husband Noah Baumbach have an idea in place for the sequel.
The couple are a powerhouse pair in Hollywood, but while people know Gerwig’s Lady Bird and Little Women, we’d wager Baumbach’s output — Marriage Story aside — might be a little more under the radar. That’s why The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected) is our pick for a weekend watch.
The film follows the eccentric and estranged children of a successful sculptor, who gather in New York when his work is selected for a big retrospective show. It’s not long, however, before they all start clashing and bringing up uncomfortable moments from the past.

The 2017 film has an impressive approval rating of 92% on Rotten Tomatoes from 186 critic reviews, with veteran critic Leonard Maltin stating: “I loved this movie from the moment it started.”
“It’s smart, relatable, laughter-through-psychic pain entertainment that happens to be elevated by a handful of wonderful performances,” wrote Entertainment Weekly, which singled out a “fantastic” Hoffman in his “juiciest role in years”.
Rolling Stone dubbed it “flat-out brilliant” while RogerEbert.com called it “one of the year’s best movies”. Salon, meanwhile, opined that it was “beautifully shot” while being both “hilarious and touching”.
