Miranda star Tom Ellis has shared a hopeful update about the BBC sitcom’s future. The comedy series ran on the BBC for three seasons between 2009 and 2015, and featured creator Miranda Hart as the central socially awkward character.

Ellis played love interest Gary Preston opposite Hart’s Miranda, with the pair getting their happily ever after at the end of the series.

Speaking to the Radio Times, Ellis revealed that he and Hart are still in touch via text and FaceTime, and while they haven’t met in person “for a few years”, they do “talk about whether there should be any more Miranda at some point in the future”.

“If we ever end up revisiting Miranda and Gary and where they are in life, I of course will be on board for it,” he said. “But I’ll be on board for it because Miranda’s got to a place where she feels she’s been able to write something that’s worthy of revisiting, which is one thing I’ve always loved about her.”

Further praising the creator, Ellis added: “[Hart] wrote every episode of that show; it all of it came out of her head. There were times when the BBC tried to help her out with other writers, but it just didn’t work because it was so unique to her voice.

“That’s why there are only 20 episodes of Miranda, but they’re 20 brilliant episodes. We’re talking about it nearly 20 years later, and it’s still iconic – it’s iconic because Miranda resisted the temptation to cash in and do more and more and more of the show.”

Alongside Ellis and Hart, Miranda also features Sarah Hadland as Miranda’s best friend Stevie, Patricia Hodge as mum Penny, and Sally Phillips as old school friend Tilly.

Ellis has since gone on to star in hit US show Lucifer, which ran until 2021 – its final three seasons airing on Netflix after a fan campaign to save it – as well as CIA, which began earlier this year on CBS.

Hart, meanwhile, will soon be seen on season two of The Celebrity Traitors, which was recently given a teaser ahead of its premiere later this year.

Miranda is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
