When she’s not starring in everything from The Act and We Were the Lucky Ones to Practical Magic 2 alongside Nicole Kidman, Sandra Bullock and Maisie Williams, Joey King likes to stay active.
But she doesn’t rely on one go-to workout. For Joey, variety is what keeps exercise enjoyable.
‘I get bored really easily if I do the same thing over and over again,’ she previously told Women’s Health. ‘I’m not one of those people who can go to a class and have that be my workout four times a week.’
Instead, she mixes traditional strength training with walking and at-home workouts. Here’s what her fitness routine looks like.
Joey King walks every day
The foundation of Joey’s routine is surprisingly simple: walking.
Her two dogs, Jesse and Fable, make sure she gets outside every day.
‘The best part about having animals in your home is that they need exercise,’ she said. ‘Even when you’re feeling groggy and don’t want to get up, you have to take the dogs for a walk.’
Joey typically heads out twice a day, fitting in one 30-minute walk in the morning and another in the evening.
‘It’s such a nice way to start the day,’ she said. ‘It forces you to get your legs moving and get some vitamin D. I love taking [the dogs] for hikes because it’s just so cute to watch them sniff everything. I could sit for hours watching them sniff.’
While walking might not feel particularly intense, it’s one of the simplest ways to improve your health. Research suggests that even relatively small amounts of brisk walking each day can lower the risk of premature death, cardiovascular disease and cancer.
Joey King’s favourite strength workout
Alongside walking, Joey loves strength training and isn’t afraid to lift heavy.
‘Weights have always been my favourite because I find it to be the most enjoyable and I see the most change in my body,’ she said. ‘If I had to choose one workout for the rest of my life, I think it would be deadlifts.’
She’s backed that up on Instagram, too. In one post, Joey celebrates a new personal best by trap-bar deadlifting 140lb (63.5kg).
She also uses YouTube workouts
Another reason Joey never gets bored? She’s always trying something new.
‘I’ll literally just Google a workout, and [do] the first thing that comes up,’ she explained. ‘There’s this 30-minute kettlebell workout I love that gets me sweating.’
The workout combines kettlebell squats, lunges and presses, making it a straightforward full-body session that’s ideal for anyone training at home with minimal equipment.
