Women Talking, the 2022 film starring The Crown’s Claire Foy and Hamnet’s Jessie Buckley, was a critical darling but sadly didn’t do numbers at the cinema. It made just $9 million off the back of a $20 million budget, and was labelled a box-office bomb.
But now it’s been added to BBC iPlayer after airing on TV the other day, so if you have a TV license you can watch it for free.
The plot focuses on a group of women who live in a remote religious community who gather to discuss what to do after making a truly horrific discovery.

Women Talking has a very strong 90% positive score on Rotten Tomatoes, and was actually named as one of the year’s best films by the American Film Institute.
“Why would you watch a movie about women talking? Because it’s brilliant”, wrote News.com.au. “This is a film that puts dialogue at its centre, but without feeling like a staid stage production. It courses with purpose and intent.”
“[Director] Sarah Polley’s trust in the material — and her actors — allows for the performances to flourish, and the performances drive the story along with the barrage of words”, reads RogerEbert.com‘s review. “[The] cast is a murderer’s row of talent.”
“The subject matter may be sombre, yet the tone of these conversations is thrillingly vibrant and engaging,” wrote Mark Kermode, while the Sydney Morning Herald praised Foy and Buckley’s “ferociously fine performances”.
